What rekeying actually changes
In a conventional pin-tumbler lock, key cuts correspond to pin sizes inside the cylinder. Rekeying changes those internal pins to match a new key combination. The exterior trim, latch or bolt, and strike remain in place; the cylinder is what changes key access.
When an eligible lock is correctly rekeyed, the former operating key no longer opens it. Rekeying is therefore a key-control solution—not a repair for damaged hardware or an upgrade. Compatible exterior locks can also be matched to one key.
Choose rekeying when the hardware is sound
Rekeying is usually the first question after a move-in, a lost or unreturned key, or when you do not know who may still hold a copy. Schlage advises rekeying or replacing exterior locks promptly after taking possession because prior keyholders may retain access.
It also fits hardware you like that only needs a fresh key. Test first: a key should turn normally, and a deadbolt should extend and retract without dragging with the door closed. A functioning lock is the best rekey candidate.
Replace when the hardware is the problem
Replacement is the better choice when the lock body, bolt, latch, trim, or strike is damaged, unreliable, or no longer suits the door. It is also the route for a change in style, function, or access method, such as a selected smart-lock setup.
Do not assume a sticking deadbolt needs a new cylinder. Schlage says a bolt that drags or hits the strike with the door closed needs strike or door-jamb alignment corrected. Rekeying will not correct worn hardware or door-and-frame issues.
Compatibility decides whether a rekey is possible
Locks are not interchangeable because they look similar. Brand, cylinder type, keyway, condition, and door preparation affect what can be rekeyed or matched to one key. Some systems are manufacturer-specific: Kwikset’s SmartKey works exclusively with Kwikset products, and Schlage’s Advanced Rekey is limited to designated hardware.
Smart locks need an additional check. A keypad or app does not mean its mechanical cylinder can match another lock. Kwikset says a SmartKey cylinder fits electronic deadbolts that use a SmartKey cylinder—not every electronic deadbolt. Share photos of both sides and the keyway before assuming compatibility.
Florida conditions, deadbolts, and smart access
Exterior hardware deserves a close look in humid or coastal conditions. ASSA ABLOY notes that dirt, grime, and airborne salt can damage surfaces and mechanisms, including the cylinder barrel, and recommends more frequent inspection and cleaning in corrosive environments. Severe corrosion or unreliable operation is a reason to discuss replacement, not only a new key.
For a smart lock, manage digital access as well as the physical key. Review the model’s instructions and app settings; supported Schlage systems allow virtual keys to be added, changed, or deleted. Removing old codes or virtual access addresses electronic entry; rekeying addresses the mechanical cylinder.
A simple move-in decision—and who to call
At a move-in, rekey sound exterior locks promptly so you control the working keys. Replace hardware if it is corroded, damaged, poorly aligned, incompatible with your one-key plan, or no longer provides the deadbolt or smart-access function you want. Keep new keys controlled and test every door from both sides.
For a typical three- or four-lock compatible home rekey, Ninja Lock’s owner-confirmed expectation is $100–$150. Call owner Cris at 941-875-7335, Monday–Saturday, 8am–6pm, with your Ellenton-area address, lock count, and photos. Ninja Lock serves within 20 miles of Ellenton. Renters should get owner or manager approval before lock work is authorized.
Frequently asked questions
01Can every lock be rekeyed?
No. Rekeying depends on the cylinder, keyway, condition, and hardware compatibility. A photo review helps Cris determine whether a lock can be rekeyed, matched to another key, or should be replaced.
02Should I rekey after moving into a home?
Usually, yes—if the exterior hardware is sound. You cannot know who retained old keys, so rekeying restores control without automatically discarding usable hardware.
03Does rekeying remove old smart-lock codes?
Not necessarily. Rekeying changes mechanical-key access. Review the lock’s app or instructions to remove old codes, virtual keys, or other digital access separately.
04When should a renter contact the owner?
Before authorizing rekeying or replacement. The property owner or manager should approve the work and receive any required keys or access information.
