1. Rekey every exterior lock
You cannot know how many copies existed before closing. Rekeying disables the old keys while keeping good hardware in place.
2. Inspect doors, frames, and strikes
A strong lock on a damaged frame is not a complete upgrade. Check alignment, fasteners, weather wear, and whether the bolt fully extends.
3. Review garage and side access
Garage entry doors and side gates are easy to overlook. Include them in the key-control plan and repair hardware that does not latch cleanly.
4. Add smart access where it helps
Keypads can reduce hidden spare keys and simplify guest or contractor access. Choose a device that fits the door and your comfort with connected features.
5. Control the new keys
Record who receives a key and avoid obvious exterior hiding places. If keys are lost later, act quickly instead of assuming they will never be used.
