Understanding Lock Grades
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) rates locks into three grades:
Grade 3 — Basic Residential

- Commonly found in budget lock sets
- Withstands about 200,000 cycles
- Our recommendation: Acceptable for interior doors only
Grade 2 — Standard Residential/Light Commercial
- Good security for most homes
- Withstands about 400,000 cycles
- Better resistance to forced entry

Grade 1 — Commercial/High-Security

- Withstands about 800,000 cycles
- Maximum resistance to forced entry, picking, and bumping

Types of Locks for Florida Homes
Deadbolts — Your First Line of Defense
Every exterior door on your Florida home should have a deadbolt. A deadbolt extends a solid metal bolt into the door frame, making it significantly harder to force open than a spring-latch knob lock alone.
Single-cylinder deadbolts are operated by a key from outside and a thumb turn from inside. These are the most common and recommended for most doors. Double-cylinder deadbolts require a key from both sides. These are useful for doors with glass panels (preventing someone from breaking the glass and reaching the thumb turn), but they can be a safety hazard in emergencies.Smart Locks — Convenience Meets Security
Smart locks have become increasingly popular in Florida communities like Lakewood Ranch and Sarasota. They offer:
- Keyless entry via code, fingerprint, or smartphone
- Remote locking and unlocking
- Guest access codes for visitors or service providers
- Activity logs showing who entered and when
Smart locks are especially useful for vacation rental properties on Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key, where you need to change access codes between guests.
Knob Locks and Lever Handles
Knob locks should never be your only security on an exterior door — they can be defeated with a wrench. However, paired with a deadbolt, they provide an additional layer. Lever handles are easier to operate and are a great choice for accessibility.
Florida-Specific Considerations
Humidity and Corrosion
Florida's humid, salt-air climate — especially in coastal areas like Cortez, Anna Maria Island, and Longboat Key — can corrode cheap lock hardware quickly. Look for locks with:
- Stainless steel or brass components
- Weather-resistant finishes
- Sealed internal mechanisms
Hurricane Preparedness
During hurricane season, your locks need to hold up under extreme conditions. Grade 1 and Grade 2 deadbolts with reinforced strike plates provide the best protection against wind-driven impacts.
Sliding Door Security
Many Florida homes have sliding glass doors leading to lanais or patios. These are a common entry point for break-ins. Consider adding:
- A sliding door lock bar
- A foot-operated lock
- A secondary pin lock in the track
